Thirds eye a promotion place.

On a day, when the captain was enjoying sunshine on his holiday, the team was left in the nervous hands of the vice captain.

With no prior experience as a captain, and depending upon all the advice of the senior, most player, Ian (Wacker) Watson, and constant remote WhatsApp support off the captain Martyn. The team with a good blend of youngsters and experienced players set out to avenge the defeat by Blaenau second team earlier in the season. Only with the help of the damp home conditions and a newly cut unpredictable wicket.

The first 10 overs after winning the toss and putting the opposition to bat, were made very interesting by the unpredictable Blackwood weather, the weather playing with the brains of the batsmen and the bowlers, stopping immediately when ever they would come off and restart the moment they would come back. The young bowlers, Nivaad and Kavin made a promising and very controlled start with Nivaad taking one and Kavin, taking three wickets within their first spell of 6 overs each.

Fielding, which is not normally our best suit was absolutely wonderful with most catches being held. At first change Arham and Adam Watkins - bowling for the first time this summer, continued the good work done by the opening bowlers and kept things very tight with both taking one wicket each. With the pressure build up by the constant dot balls and tight feeling, the new captains job was made even easier by Mohed coming in and taking two wickets in 2 balls, one to a spectacular superman diving catch by Abdullah running from behind the square leg Umpire crossing and diving across and taking the second spectacular catch, only surpassed by the cat. Sticking by Ian Watson in the slips to a beautiful Kavin delivery earlier in the game.

Lewis came on and kept things tight, appealing against a 12 year old and feeling embarrassed about it, finally took a simple catch, ending the opposition innings at 88 all out. The new captain went into the lunch break relieved and relaxed with the thought of going home early and finishing the job without losing any wickets. Ian and Andy sent in to chase a small total expecting a two an over boring innings.

The new captain quickly realised the reason for lack of hair of the captain Martyn, when first Andy then Lewis and Ian departed playing almost identical shots to some good catching by the opposition and with score at 9/3 in the 3rd over. The still padding up stand-in captain had to join his son Abdullah at the crease wondering what had hit him still in his training top he was reminded by the opposition he was still wearing his white jumper.

The pair set out to try and calm down the jangling nerves in the middle. On a pitch that deteriorated the more it dried with some balls spitting and taking the glove from a good length, both Abdullah and Sibghat were given a life with a dropped catch each set to bore the remaining batsmen in the pavilion with some dogged test match-style batting. With uncharacteristically Sibghat only hitting 2 fours in his 68 ball unbeaten innings and Abdullah finally getting fed up and hitting 3 fours in an over and finishing the game in style with anti-climatic 4 byes.

On a day that started with the team erecting the fence nervously and setting up the ground without the ever present Martyn for the first time ever - ended with a well deserved victory to be able to go home and watch a legend of the cricket Stuart Broad announce his retirement. What a beautiful game this is indeed !
