With the Firsts needing to call on vital Second team players, including skipper Mark Harnden, Jiffin Kalliyath and Richard Fair, the second team travelled to second placed Bay Dragons needing a handful of points to escape the relegation zone.
The only bowlers left playing who had taken wickets in 2nd XI this year were a 14 year old girl and two 12 year olds. There were three players who needed to leave half way through, a captain who had never captained before and an unknown player who hadn't played for 18 years. Added to the mix was a tiny outfield and heavy rain at tea which made the pitch very difficult when Rogerstone batted. The portents were not good!
Stand in skipper Martyn Smith won the toss and fielded to give the side maximum opportunity to claim bowling points. Harri Williams bowled exceptionally with the new ball and Jasmine Smith was unlucky not to pick up 2 wickets. Abdullah Majeed settled into a nice rhythm and bowled some beauties to claim 2 for 51 and there was a wicket with his first ball of off spin for Ben Williams. Andy Williams rolled back the years to bowl 7 tidy overs but when The Dragons had passed 200 with only 2 wickets down Rogerstone set out to buy some wickets. Smith claimed a steepling caught and bowled with his second catch and Harri Williams took a much deserved wicket with an unusual stumping. A special mention should go to debutant Jamie McIndoe who put his body bravely on the line with some terrific fielding. 282 for 5 was always going to be a tough chase given that the Williams clan had to leave at 5pm. They opened the innings in the rain to get maximum time at the crease and took the score to beyond 40 before having to retire. Alan Hughes battled out the remaining overs for a hard fought 42 not out, but the star innings was from Sib Majeed who batted intelligently to make 41 and help drive the side to 3 bowling points at 162 for 4.
So with job done, Rogerstone could return with enough points to camber out of the relegation places with 4 games of the season to go.
